ISLAND #5: FEDERICA SALA

ISLAND

#5

An island is something that can be spotted at a distance, encircled by the sea and by the horizon.

An island is a place that changes as its limits are always redefined by the growing or shrinking of its coastline.

An island distinguishes itself from all those that surround it for some particular characters.

ISLAND \ ˈī-lənd \  is a section that consists in highlighting a series of works by contemporary jewelry artists within the space of the gallery providing them with a special display.

Island #5 presents a work by Federica Sala called Time to Play, an ongoing research on the role of play as a learning tool.

Time to play is a collection of play-boxes for grown-ups, inspired by well-known children's games and designed to reflect on contemporary themes for which it is difficult to find an explanation.

Time to Play was first exhibited in March 2019 during the group show “A room of one's own” at LOT62, Schleißheimer Straße, 80333 München and hosted by 84GHz, below, pics of the exhibition by Lilian Mattuschka

From the artist’s statement: “Everyday life defines who we are, through new experiences that generate future thoughts and actions. In a time where the boundaries between personal space and working life have become increasingly blurred, eventually disappearing, thanks to my children I had the chance and the opportunity to think about the action of “play” as a learning opportunity.

In the playful dimension, mechanisms belonging to reality are re-proposed and recreated, so that the child, while playing, acquires rules, concepts, information and dynamics that will help him in understanding and facing everyday life.

The return to the dimension of the game is on the one hand the desire to understand, on the other the need to evade from a reality that escapes our understanding but which continues to touch us, leaving us more and more overwhelmed.

Once opened, the box offer objects with which it is necessary to interact in order to understand their meaning and functioning. Among the plausible activities is the possibility of wearing those objects, with solutions to be discovered by trial and error (which are also part of the game).
